Where Did They Go?

Where Did They Go?

Independence Day, what a let down! It always amazes me how many bad science fiction films are made which cost a thousand times that of films which were fine as they were: low-budget, maximum effort.

You have classics like Flight Of The Navigator—where a boy discovers an amazing space-ship, maybe the best small space-ship to have ever graced the silver screen, and gets to fly it about and have the time of his life—and Inner Space, a bizarre but outlandish film full of comedy and drama and utter madness where a poor excuse for a soldier is injected into a person; but for every classic sci-fi film there are dozens of big name films that have flopped. One such film has to be War Of The Worlds—pretty much a capital offence which went unpunished.

War Of The Worlds is not so much a bad film as three quarters of a good film with an absolute stinker taped to the end, like we wouldn’t notice; the beginning—where a massive tripod alien explodes out of the ground and proceeds to vaporize any human within a hundred feet, yes!—was fantastic, and the middle made sense, but the end–I won’t ruin it for you if you haven’t seen it but come on, Tom Cruise really should have know better than to go along with that, no?

The list really is endless. What about Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy? I had high hopes for how this would turn out but yet again, it ended up nowhere near as good as we’d all been hoping–It’s just not a good enough excuse any more for only the fans to love it.

I suppose we can trace things back to years ago. As soon as films became colour they started to loose some of that magic.

Of course, that’s not to say there aren’t some great ones: I Am Legend was a corker of a film. A retelling of the excellent Omega Man, but with a slightly different and more modern spin, that film gave me hope.

As a complete sidebar, I have just looked at the new Stratigic Marketing Enigin site and it really looks amazing! I am really enjoying reading the posts that have gone up already, you should all really check this one out.
