The Survival of ‘Survivors’.

Years ago, the BBC had a fine selection of Science Fiction programmes. There always seemed to be such an excellent choice. Shows such as; ‘Dr. Who’, ‘Survivors’, ‘Blake’s 7’, ‘The Day of the Triffids ‘and ‘Sapphire and Steel’ were all a part of their regular schedule and thousands of viewers tuned-in each week. But then there was a bit of a dry spell. It seemed that these wonderfully imaginative shows were slowly dying out.

However, over the past few years it has started to change again. The Beeb have realised the magic of these creaky old programmes and have begun reinvent them for the twenty-first century. And one of the most successful examples of this is the new, ‘Survivors’.

The original programme, which was made in the seventies, was actually a bit depressing. Not a great deal happened in each part and it seemed that mankind was doomed. For the modern version, the BBC wanted to concentrate on a more positive note; key words for the new series being; hope and humanity.

What makes the rehash of ‘Survivors’ work so well is it’s concentration on a strong and engrossing story. It may be a big budget show, but this is not blatantly obvious because there are not masses of CGIs. There are some impressive special effects in the series, but only when the story demands it. It’s a shame this same technique has not been employed on some of the other BBC remakes of cult Sci-Fi.

There is a good selection of characters in ‘Survivors’ and it is a realistic snapshot of modern British life. If a virus really did wipe out most of the population, then you could imagine the remainder of people being much like this.

Well done BBC for giving us some proper science fiction to watch!

As it happens, I sometimes look into online products as a matter of interest and I have lately found a company that does online human resources software. To have all applicable people logged into the central network seems like a really obvious idea to me, also a useful time saver, I am a little confused why this is the first time it is getting to be a big thing.
