Retro Sci-Fi Rules.
The television of the 1970s was rife with science fiction. There were programmes for adults, programmes for children and programmes for children that shouldn’t really be watched by children…
Even the episodes of Dr.Who were a bit too scary for kids. Tom Baker himself was a little intense and the stories had children all over the country hiding behind the furniture.
Then there were the other shows such as, ‘The Tomorrow People’, ‘The Clifton House Mystery’ and ‘The Children of The Stones’. These were all guaranteed to give you nightmares if you were below the age of fifteen… Just who decided that these were children’s programmes is a bit of a mystery, but it all worked out very well. At the end of the day, kids love scary stories. Even television for younger children was showing some pretty weird stuff with things like, ‘Rentaghost’.
There were also plenty of other sci-fi shows to watch as well. ‘Blake’s 7’ and ‘Survivors’ were both hugely successful and ‘Sapphire and Steel’ attracted massive amounts of viewers. There was so much imagination in the television of the 70s. Yes, there were some rubbish programmes, but standards were higher back then and there was a better quality of television.
The children of today will not be able to look back on the television of their childhood with quite the same amount of fondness. The science fiction that is on TV now is sadly lacking in imagination most of the time. I think that it is because there are too many channels available to us and, as a consequence, there is not such a high regard for quality. It is a shame that our programmes cannot be as good as they were thirty-odd years ago when we had so much less technology.
So before I log off, I have something to admit. I love Xena Warrior Princess (sorry Josie). I was viewing the most recent season on dvd well into the night and the acting was excellent! I would highly recommend this one to all of you..
